Afghanistan, 1975: Amir, at twelve, is determined to win the neighborhood kite-fighting competition, and his devoted friend Hassan swears to support him. However, neither boy can predict the fateful incident that would destroy their lives—what will happen to Hassan that afternoon. Amir realizes that one day he will have to return to Afghanistan under Taliban rule in order to find the one thing his new world is unable to provide for him: redemption, after the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America.
