The disease known as hydrocephalus causes fluid to build up inside the brain. Since 500 AD in Egypt, hydrocephalus has occasionally been mentioned in medical literature. An unusual buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain's ventricles is a sign of hydrocephalus. As a result, the intracranial pressure inside the skull increases, causing the head to enlarge gradually, convulsions, tunnel vision, and mental impairment. The age of start and the chronicity of the underlying illness course both affect the clinical symptoms of hydrocephalus. Increased intracranial pressure is a symptom of acute ventricular dilatation, whereas Adams triad is a more subtle sign of chronic ventricular dilatation.
